Innovation Week 2025: Study, Start, Succeed

Innovation Week 2025 at the University of St Andrews brought together students, staff, alumni and the wider innovation community for five days of energy, insight and collaboration. The week was a celebration of bold thinking, practical learning and genuine connection.

A powerful opening: “Brewing Innovation, Changing Lives”

The week began with an inspiring keynote, “Brewing Innovation, Changing Lives,” delivered by Max Dubiel and Ted Rosner, co-founders of Redemption Roasters. As the world’s first prison-based coffee company, Redemption Roasters trains people in custody as baristas and roastery technicians, supporting them into employment upon release.

In a lively and thought-provoking session, Max and Ted shared the story of turning a simple business idea into a social enterprise that tackles reoffending, promotes rehabilitation and delivers real social value. They spoke candidly about balancing mission and growth, navigating the challenges of scaling a purpose-driven company, and why authentic impact is built through persistence, empathy and collaboration.

The keynote was formally opened by Derek Watson MBE, Chief Executive of St Andrews Innovation, who spoke about the University’s strategic transformation and the global impact of its innovation agenda. His remarks highlighted how St Andrews continues to shine internationally by fostering creativity, enterprise and partnership.
